Obstetric Care

During your pregnancy, a group practice such as ours assures you complete medical care at all times including prenatal visits, high-risk pregnancy consultation and management, delivery and post-partum.

Our practice encourages prenatal education and offers prepared childbirth and breast feeding classes in our office. We also have reading materials and video tapes available in our library.

We have a call system to cover deliveries and emergencies at night, on weekends, and holidays. One doctor and one nurse-midwife are always on call during these times on a rotational basis, and can always be contacted by calling 470-4000.

The Durham Women's Clinic offers a "global fee" obstetric service, including your normal prenatal care, delivery and post-partum care up to six weeks. Additional charges are made for special tests and other indications. Please ask for information on the scope of your obstetric care and fees when you come in for your first visit.

Gynecologic Care

For your periodic checkups and other scheduled visits, you will be seen by the healthcare provider of your choice. We strongly recommend that you have a physical examination on a yearly basis. Such an examination includes a breast, abdominal, and pelvic exam with Pap smear, and other procedures that can provide early diagnosis for many potentially serious diseases.

In the event that an emergency occurs and your care provider is not in the office, one of the other members of the group will be available to you. Each has access to the medical records so that if an emergency does arise, they are familiar with your medical history.

Surgery

Outpatient surgery not routinely performed in our office setting is usually performed at the Davis Ambulatory Surgical Center. Surgery requiring hospitalization will be performed at Durham Regional Hospital.

Laboratory

One important part of your medical care may be the performance of laboratory tests. For your convenience, our office includes an in-house laboratory to provide basic lab functions, as well as a full range of support from major outside laboratories.

As part of this specialty, we treat all age groups, from pre-adolescent girls to post-menopausal women. In spite of the fact that obstetrics and gynecology is technically a specific medicine, it has in recent years become known as a "primary care specialty", which means that many women consider their obstetrician/gynecologist as their main doctor. Thus, if problems occur that are outside our particular range of care, we will work closely with internists, psychiatrists, general surgeons, etc. to provide appropriate treatment and consultation for you. In such cases we actively pursue any follow-up care that is necessary. We also place particular emphasis on preventative medicine, helping you learn better ways to take care of yourself.

A successful women's health care relationship requires mutual understanding, respect, and confidence.
